The aim of this work is to provide a Christian and moral input into our local schools from the Christian Community within the Heatons. It was set up by the Heatons Churches Partnership,
(which is currently supported by 10 churches, including Heaton Mersey Methodist) in co-operation with Christians in Schools Trust. It is funded by both churches and individuals
Christians.
The first worker, Andy Phillips, was employed in September 2008, but when the hours needed to increase, Linda Lanigan took over in September 2010.
Linda's role is to take school assemblies, RE lessons, help run lunchtime and after-school clubs, encourage churches and schools to form relationships by planning and arranging projects where
schools and churches work together eg the Easter Card Project. 'It's Your Move' Transition Programme for Year 6 pupils, and school participation in 'The Party in the Park', organised by the
Heatons
Churches.
I was born and have lived in Manchester most of my life. I am the eldest child and have a sister and brother. My sister is also my best friend and for the last 10 years we have lived next door to one another, we haven’t persuaded our brother to move next door, yet! My parents weren’t regular church goers but I was brought up, with the sense that church was part of important events in life, such as christenings and weddings. I remember as a child feeling that church was a special place that felt different than anywhere else I visited.
However, my own walk with the Lord started after the birth of my daughter, who is 12 in September. In church I have been involved in Sunday school, Toddler group, nurturing a group of teenage girls from church and also setting up a group for lone parents in the church.
My working life began in retail pharmacy and for many years I was happy but there was a part of me that wanted to study and work with children. I changed careers and worked in a private day nursery. In 2010 I completed an Early Childhood Studies Degree. It was as my degree was finishing that I saw the advert for this role and thought how great it sounded, working with children and education but also immersed in the community that I live in and being involved with the local churches. I feel very privileged being the Heatons Schools Worker and I am excited about the future and all that the Lord is doing in the Heatons.
